The Essence of Pukka

3rd listopada 2014

With all of the changes to the way our herbal teas and herbal supplements look, you may have noticed a little bit of self-reflection going on at Pukka. It’s always healthy to step back from life and take stock of where we have got to. Sometimes we are so tied up in the everyday, its difficult to see the wood for the trees, but looking with fresh eyes gives us a panoramic view of our world. Even then, it still takes quite a bit of extra effort to clearly articulate the essence of who you are and what your purpose is, to really learn from what you see. But it’s worth it.

One of the many things we learnt on this little journey of self-reflection was that we could do a better job of creating a closer relationship between our herbal teas and herbal supplements. After all, they contain the same grade of herbs, many of which are pharmacopoeial quality, and both have the same intention of bringing some good to the world; our herbal teas are a spring-board into the delicious world of herbal blessings whilst our supplements, or Pukka Organic Wellbeing as we call them, are a swallow-dive into the wellspring of herbal health. I know from my experience as a herbalist that using plants is a cornerstone of vibrant health which is why we want to take you on an amazing journey of herbal discovery exploring the incredible smells, flavours, colours and experiences that plants have to offer.

As part of making this path a bit easier for you to follow, we have evolved our teas and herbal supplements, to reflect the heart of Pukka that beats every day to be a force for good, stimulate positive change and help connect people with the power of plants. It’s why the central ‘heart’ of the new design is a metaphorical image of a droplet of the essence of nature: something pure, something powerful, something perfect. The new creative designs on our herbal teas and herbal supplements, interweaving people and plants, are now even more vibrant and, we hope, reflect who we are more colourfully.

And these colours and designs are organised into families for both our teas and supplements. Ones that correspond to how they taste, make you feel or how they match certain needs – because we want to help people understand the positive difference our teas and supplements can make. And that this understanding is centred in the magical power of herbs – even if for many it all starts with just one cup of incredible organic herbal tea.

One of the first things I was taught when I studied Ayurveda was that an effective healer develops the skills to enter ‘the heart of a patient’, to really see what they need. We have tried to follow this principle in everything we do from making beautiful herbal tea to this exciting new website and hope that what we stand for might play a small part of your own journey of self-reflection.

Fortunately, after all of this navel gazing here at Pukka, the essence of something Tim and I wrote down many years ago still stands true today;

“Through the incredible power of plants we will inspire you to lead a more conscious life. We will strive everyday to help create a Pukka Planet benefiting people, plants and planet.”

To us 'conscious' means 'being more alive to the wonder of life, more connected with your community, and respecting the beauty and power nature's healing herbs'.

Of course, we recognize that this is an ongoing pursuit and that we have a lot more work to do. You will hear about it here first.

Sebastian Pole, Sebastian Pole, Co-founder and Master Herbsmith

Hello There. I’m a Co-founder and the Master Herbsmith at Pukka Herbs. As well as having the most amazing job of formulating all our organic teas and supplements I am a passionate environmentalist – that’s why we are 100% organic, pioneers in sustainably sourcing herbs with FairWild, and we give 1% of our turnover for rejuvenating the Planet. I also run my own herbal practice in Bath which I’ve done since 1998. I practise an eclectic blend of Ayurvedic, Chinese and Western Herbal Medicine and am a registered member of the Ayurvedic Practitioners Association, Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine and the Unified Register of Herbal Practitioners. I love using the principles of Ayurveda (aka the ancient art of living wisely) – coupled with insights of traditional healing and modern science - to help create the best of health. Inspired by my time in India, I love cooking a vegetarian feast and rely on regular yoga practice with lots of herbal teas and tonics to keep me well. I am passionate about running a business that inspires positive change and brings the benefit of the incredible power of plants to everyone we connect with – from our farmers, collectors, Pukka team to you. I live on a two acre garden-farm in Somerset where I grow a rainbow spectrum of medicinal and nourishing plants for my bees and family to thrive on.
